DAY 1: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18

Brooklyn and Chelsea

The day begins with van transportation from Manhattan to the Gowanus neighborhood in Brooklyn, where we will be treated to a private behind-the-scenes tour of the historic 117-year-old power station, reimagined as a contemporary art center. We will check out the massive art fabrication studios, turbine hall, event spaces, café and more, while learning about the architecture and design of this world-renowned project by Herzog & de Meuron and its transformative past, present and future, under the vision of PHA President Eric Shiner.

We will have a delicious lunch at a “top pick” restaurant in Gowanus before heading back across the Brooklyn Bridge and over to Chelsea to peruse the Highline and some of the best galleries in the city, with special tours for our group at the longstanding Affordable Art Fair in the Starrett-Lehigh Building, and gallery and studio visits in the famed Greene Naftali.

Our Art Fox Travel group will get VIP access to the Affordable Art Fair and get a leg up on the joy of accessible collecting before Armory Week! Since their debut in London in 1999, they have since expanded to 16 cities across the world with the mission to “democratize the art world” and help people fall in love with art.

Within a stone’s throw to the fair, the Greene Naftali is a must-see building. We will also have the opportunity to visit an artist’s private studio in the upper floors of the building and tour the gallery’s current exhibitions of artists featured in the Venice Biennale.

The day concludes with transportation to your hotel to enjoy dinner and a great night’s sleep before waking up early (not too early) to escape the city and head to one of the most vibrant small-city art destinations in America…

DAY 2: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19

Hudson, NY

We will take a very scenic drive up from the city (approx. 2 hours) to arrive at the stunning Olana State Historic Site, home to the 19th Century Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church. The gorgeous architecture, interior design, luscious grounds, and panoramic views of the river valley below are unparalleled…

Following lunch after our visit to Olana, noted curator, critic, and Hudson Valley resident Bill Arning will lead an insider's two-hour walking tour of the season's most compelling exhibitions. Hudson is a walkable landscape where ambitious nonprofit institutions and adventurous commercial galleries coexist within a few blocks. Historic venues such as Time & Space Limited and Hudson Hall now share the city with a dynamic and ever-evolving constellation of galleries including Front Room, Fireplace Project, Private/Public, and Philip Douglas Fine Arts. This exclusive tour offers an unparalleled introduction to the energy, ambition, and creativity that have made the Hudson Valley one of today's most exciting art destinations.

As the region's art scene continues to expand, galleries open, relocate, and reinvent themselves, making each visit a unique snapshot of a cultural ecosystem in motion. The afternoon continues with a short drive to nearby Kinderhook for a visit to Jack Shainman's celebrated School, where museum-quality installations showcase one of the country's leading contemporary art programs. We conclude at the Shaker Museum's new Chatham exhibition space with a newly commissioned installation by Hudson Valley artist Kiki Smith, one of the most influential figures in contemporary American art. We conclude the evening with check-in to a peaceful and charming local overnight stay.

DAY 3: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20

Magazzino to Manhattan

Time to leave Hudson to return to NYC with one more stop along the way that will be sure to impress. The Magazzino in Cold Springs, NY, showcases Italian art movement Arte Povera and more, with special exhibitions featuring Tutto Boetti and Yoichi Ohira. Get a taste of Italian Postmodernism and “Japan in Murano” and get the travel bug for the next month’s Art Fox trip to Venice for the Biennale!

BONUS!
After returning to the city, friends of the Art Fox (this means you) are invited to meet at the Manhattan home of Steve Shane on Sunday afternoon for a salon-style art collection tour. This will be a 90-minute visit and discussion with Cindy’s great friend and respected art lover (he does not like the word “collector”) with a major passion for art and knowledge of art history…

Most of Steve’s leisure time is spent immersed in the world of contemporary art, from visiting galleries,
museums, conferences, and art fairs, presenting lectures, to hosting the Steve Shane Art salons in his home. During a dynamic, interactive “salon-style” visit, Steve shares anecdotes and provides special insight into an “unconsciously curated” selection of artworks and will share with us the (enticing and compelling) themes he finds while reflecting on his collection.
